Consistency

Goals may seem impossible to reach. We say to ourselves, “I am too (negative thought) to reach my goals.” Once we begin to measure where we are at the moment to the work it will take to accomplish our goals, we become doubtful or worse, depressed. Our usual thoughts of negativity seeps in and we are once again unable to begin or finish what we started. Our goals begin to seem too lofty or unrealistic, so we retreat back to our place of immobility. This then becomes a revolving circle of starting and stopping, then eventually letting it go altogether. If goal reaching was easy, then most of the world would be where they have always dreamt of. So what is it that holds most of us back? What is that key formula that we all need? One of the biggest components of having success is consistency. Consistency is an action of upward mobility that is done regardless of feelings. It is what you do no matter what to fulfill the goals you pursue.

The fact is consistency brings results, but it isn’t easy to accomplish. To be consistent, you have to ignore the negative feelings that you’re accustomed to hearing and believing. You also need to learn how to fail properly because consistency is a repetitive action in spite of failure. Consistency also forces you to focus on the work at hand and not the feelings you have in the moment. This is hard for most people because consistency is all about doing the same thing over and over for an expected result while displacing emotions. For those who struggle with consistency, it is important that you practice small drills at the beginning and then build on them later. For example, if you have a hard time being consistent with exercise, then begin the drill of moving for a minuet or two every day. This may seem extremely simple, but the goal is consistency. Start small until you are able to make this movement a habit. Build on your momentum by making it 10 minuets, then 15, then 20, and so on. This example can be used for any goal setting opportunity. While learning to be consistent, you want to find joy in the process. Once you have accomplish even your smallest goal, celebrate it! It is never too late be consistent so get back to goal setting, start small, learn the process of being consistent.
